{"id":1898,"date":"2023-01-13T08:49:10","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T13:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/news\/?p=1898"},"modified":"2023-04-06T10:23:53","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T14:23:53","slug":"learning-about-american-idioms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/news\/learning-about-american-idioms\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching American English Language Idioms: \u201cWhat\u2019s Up?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Steven Rashba, ARM, 越南直播<\/p>\n<p>If I don\u2019t \u201cshake a leg\u201d and finish this quickly, my boss will go \u201cthrough the roof,\u201d but it is so difficult to do since I\u2019m \u201cgreen around the edges\u201d and feel like \u201ca fish out of water.\u201d I\u2019m \u201cbetween a rock and a hard place;\u201d perhaps \u201cI have bitten off more than what I can chew.\u201d Or perhaps I should \u201ckeep a stiff upper lip\u201d and go \u201cfull steam ahead.\u201d\u202fAfter all, there is \u201cno use in crying over spilled milk!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>American English, like many languages, is filled with idiomatic expressions that can be very difficult for the non-native, or perhaps even non-local, speaker to understand.\u202fBut we can help.\u202fClasses at 越南直播\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/academics\/schools-colleges\/eli\/\">English Language Institute<\/a> not only teach students about grammar, reading, listening\/speaking and research writing skills, but also focus on the living language \u2014 understanding how people speak \u2014 the expressions people use on a daily basis. ESL not only involves study but also requires extensive practice since the student\u2019s goal is mastering a vibrant, living, and ever-changing language.<\/p>\n<p>UB English Language Institute classes not only introduce students to common idioms but also provide the opportunity to study\/use them in context.\u202fOur classes employ a series of idiom-laden class readings and activities for students to use their critical thinking skills to decipher meanings.<\/p>\n<p>One of the class readings is about foreign doctors who come to the United States to practice.\u202fBecause these doctors are well versed in textbook and medical English but have never been exposed to \u201cstreet language,\u201d idioms, and slang, they encounter difficulties communicating with their patients.\u202fFor example, when told that his patient was feeling \u201cunder the weather,\u201d the doctor asked if it was going to rain.\u202fSimilarly, a pediatrician was confused when his young patient complained of a \u201ctummy\u201d ache; after all, the word \u201ctummy\u201d is informal and does not appear in most medical dictionaries.\u202fAnother article described its protagonist as being \u201csick and tired\u201d of having his car \u201cbroken into,\u201d subject to misinterpretation as expensive car repairs leading to exhaustion and illness.<\/p>\n<p>Idioms and informal language may not help with research essays and academic presentations, but a general understanding and awareness certainly makes the transition into American university life far easier for students.\u202fWhen asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s up,\u201d our students are likely to answer, \u201cNot much; how about with you,\u201d and not \u201cdark clouds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/academics\/schools-colleges\/eli\/\">English Language Institute<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/academics\/schools-colleges\/eli\/bridge-to-college\">Bridge to College<\/a> program are part of UB\u2019s College of Science and Society.<\/p>\n<p><em>Steven Rashba, ARM, is the Director of Modern Languages and the English Language Institute and currently teaches Advanced ELI 140 (Research Writing for ESL Students). The English Language Institute welcomes international students with Intermediate and Advanced English language proficiency. Rashba has been affiliated with UB for 23 years and is one of the world\u2019s approximately 3.95 billion bilingual (or more) speakers.
