In order to become a crisis counselor, students will need to earn their master\u2019s degree in Counseling, complete their post-graduate clinical work, and earn licensure according to their state requirements. They may do this through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. If clients are actively experiencing trauma, however, counselors may use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.nctsn.org\/course\/index.php?categoryid=11\">psychological first aid<\/a>\u00a0to reduce acute distress.<\/p>\n<p><em>Work Environment<\/em><br \/>\nCrisis counselors work in a variety of settings. Primarily, however, they work where they are needed immediately. For example, they can be found working in the following locations and settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental Health Clinics<\/li>\n<li>Community Centers<\/li>\n<li>Humanitarian Aid Organizations<\/li>\n<li>Telephone Crisis Counseling Centers<\/li>\n<li>University Counseling Centers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crisis counselors may be asked to work in suicide prevention, assisting domestic violence victims, and helping clients cope in the aftermath of a weather disaster or act of large-scale violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Substance Abuse Counselor<\/strong><br \/>\nAlmost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictioncenter.com\/addiction\/addiction-statistics\/\">21 million Americans<\/a>\u00a0have at least one addiction. Unfortunately, only 10% of these individuals receive treatment. It\u2019s imperative, then, that they receive compassionate care from their substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse counselors work with clients to help them address their addictive behavior and incorporate methods to begin recovery. In order to become a substance abuse counselor, students will need to graduate with their master\u2019s degree in Counseling, complete their post-graduate clinical work in substance abuse counseling, and pass a licensing exam to practice as a substance abuse counselor. This licensing is state-specific. Certification can be obtained from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcc.org\/\">National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Responsibilities<\/em><br \/>\nSubstance abuse counselors work with a variety of clients who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction.
