Every student’s journey to higher education is their own, but some stand out for their unique nature. For Fadil Baco, the path to UB wasn’t straightforward. It’s precisely the twists and turns that make his story of resilience, determination, and community so compelling.<\/p>\n

Among the many moments that define Fadil’s time at UB, one stands out for its reflection of his character: a chance meeting outside the UB Bookstore. Richard Hebert, manager of the UB Bookstore, recalls that moment vividly. Struggling to carry a crate of books too heavy to manage alone, Richard encountered Fadil, who quickly stepped in to help. Days later, the same scenario happened again, leading Richard to offer Fadil a job in the bookstore. “That’s just who Fadil is,” Richard says. “Someone who’s always ready to lend a hand.”<\/p>\n

This moment, though just one among many in Fadil’s journey, showcases his positive energy, dedication, and ability to connect with people across campus.<\/p>\n

Taking that first step<\/h2>\n

Fadil’s journey to UB started thousands of miles away in Parakou, Benin, a small West African country bordering Nigeria. He grew up as the eldest of three brothers in a close-knit family. His mother, a judge on Benin’s Constitutional Court, and his father, a sociology professor, instilled in him the importance of education and perseverance.<\/p>\n

Growing up, Fadil attended Christian schools while practicing Islam, an experience that helped him appreciate and embrace cultural diversity. Developing a love for languages as a young boy, he became fluent in five, including Dendi, his native language, and French, Benin’s national language.<\/p>\n

Although Fadil possessed strong linguistic skills, he often regretted not having more opportunities to study English during primary school. Determined to overcome this gap, he taught himself by watching English-language television, all while nurturing a dream of pursuing higher education in an English-speaking country.<\/p>\n

After taking two years of college coursework in Ghana, under the recommendation of his professors Fadil first aimed to study in the United Kingdom. The high cost of living and tuition in the UK led him to explore other options. A tip from a family friend then cast his sights to New York City. However, challenges in securing the necessary paperwork caused him to miss a crucial application deadline at what he thought was his first-choice school. Undeterred, Fadil broadened his search, eventually making a discovery that would forever change his trajectory \u2014 UB.<\/p>\n

Finding a home away from home<\/h2>\n

Transitioning to life in the U.S. was both exciting and challenging for Fadil. As UB’s first student from Benin, he knew he was embarking on a beginning that would break new ground. The cultural diversity found in Bridgeport<\/a> has helped smooth this transition for Fadil, who eats at\u00a0his favorite African restaurant every Friday evening after attending prayer services at his local mosque.<\/p>\n

On campus, Fadil has found success and opportunities to practice his leadership through the Center for Student Involvement<\/a>. He is the events coordinator, serves on the marketing committee for the Student Programming Board, and he recently joined the African Student Association. These opportunities have helped Fadil cope with missing his family and his home in Benin. Reflecting on his choice to get involved, Fadil shares, “I chose UB because it felt welcoming. It’s not just a place to study \u2014 it’s a community where I feel at home.”<\/p>\n

Fadil’s sense of belonging at UB is shaped largely by the supportive relationships he’s built and the meaningful opportunities he’s pursued, including his part-time role at the UB Bookstore, where he has become a highly valued team member. Now his manager, Richard Hebert describes Fadil as \u201chighly intelligent, detail-oriented, and always calm under pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Fadil brings energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to everything he does,” he shares. “He’s someone who goes beyond expectations, and I’m certain he will become one of UB’s distinguished alumni, spreading love and positive energy wherever he goes.”<\/p>\n

Building a future in data analytics<\/h2>\n

Fadil is pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree in Data Analytics<\/a>, developing the skills necessary to interpret complex data, uncover trends, and drive informed decision-making. This field complements his natural curiosity and problem-solving skills. “I’m a planner,” he explains. “I enjoy thinking critically and analyzing situations to uncover the best solutions.”<\/p>\n

Fadil\u2019s impact is also evident in the classroom. Sharon Kratochvil, Ph.D.<\/a>, one of his professors, commends his intellectual abilities and curiosity: “I’ve gotten to know Fadil and find him a very curious and intelligent student with strong critical thinking skills \u2014 which will serve him very well in both his academic and professional careers.”<\/p>\n

While his studies prepare him for diverse and rewarding career opportunities, the personal growth he\u2019s experienced at UB has also been transformative. Through his coursework, part-time work at the bookstore, and active involvement in campus life, Fadil has refined the skills he believes will enable him to make a meaningful impact \u2014 both in his home country of Benin and beyond.<\/p>\n

“I want to inspire others, especially students from Benin, to dream big and chase their goals,” Fadil shares. \u201cEducation opens doors, and UB has equipped me to walk confidently through them<\/p>\n

“You\u2019ll be supported every step of the way.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Fadil’s story highlights how a supportive environment is essential for success as an international student. At UB, he has found mentors, friends, and resources that have eased his transition and enriched his experience. From navigating paperwork to building meaningful connections, the University has been a steady source of encouragement.<\/p>\n

His advice to prospective international students is simple. \u201cDon’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,\u201d he shares. \u201cUB is a place where you’ll be supported every step of the way.”<\/p>\n

A bright future ahead<\/h2>\n

As Fadil looks to the future, his aspirations remain ambitious. He envisions a career where he can use data to solve problems and drive meaningful change. Beyond his professional goals, Fadil hopes to continue inspiring others with his story, saying, “I want people to see that no matter where you come from, you can achieve great things with determination and the right support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fadil’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence, the promise of education, and the value of community connection.
