Preparation for playing sports in college starts long before your first day of classes. If you\u2019re a parent looking for advice for parents of high school seniors with college sports dreams, you\u2019ve come to the right place.<\/p>\n<p>The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has strict rules governing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/news\/day-in-the-life-of-a-college-athlete\/\">student-athletes<\/a>. Governing bodies like this want to ensure you\u2019re prepped for the academic side of college as well as the sports side. The NCAA eligibility requirements for student-athletes in college are designed to optimize the future success of student-athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we\u2019ll explore the eligibility requirements and other aspects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/news\/guide-to-playing-sports-in-college\/\">succeeding at sports in college<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The academic playbook: Core courses and GPA<\/h2>\n<p>Admissions for a student athlete is not entirely dependent on your athletic performance. Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/news\/how-to-respond-to-college-coach-email\/\">college coaches can even consider recruiting you<\/a>, they must ensure you meet the NCAA\u2019s initial academic eligibility benchmark. Coaches cannot recruit you, regardless of your athletic talent, if you fail to meet that benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/division-ii\/\">check NCAA Division II requirements<\/a> to make sure your academic performance is also up to par.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for Division II sports, a high school student must meet two primary academic criteria:<\/p>\n<h3>1. The 16-core course rule<\/h3>\n<p>The NCAA has preapproved core courses that you must complete before high school graduation to be eligible as a collegiate athlete. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 years of English<\/li>\n<li>2 years of mathematics (algebra I or higher)<\/li>\n<li>2 years of natural or physical science<\/li>\n<li>9 additional years of combined coursework in areas like social science, foreign languages, or advanced math\/science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. The minimum core GPA<\/h3>\n<p>You also have to do more than just pass the classes. Cs across the board won\u2019t make you eligible as an NCAA athlete. You\u2019ll need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.20 within just those 16 core courses.<\/p>\n<p>While your overall GPA is relevant to college admissions and additional scholarships, it\u2019s not considered part of the NCAA eligibility requirements for college student-athletes. They only calculate grades from your core classes. Having a high GPA will help your admissions regardless, so make sure to always do your best to keep your grades up.<\/p>\n<h2>What you need to do to stay eligible in college<\/h2>\n<p>Making sure you\u2019re NCAA eligible in high school is the first step. Once you\u2019re in college and playing, making sure you stay eligible becomes your new priority. To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeport.edu\/admissions\/life-on-campus\/recreation-and-athletics\">maintain your status as a student-athlete<\/a> who\u2019s allowed to practice, travel, and compete within college sports, you\u2019ll need to meet certain academic benchmarks each semester.<\/p>\n<p>The benchmarks you\u2019re required to meet to remain eligible are full-time enrollment and minimum credit hours. The <a href=\"https:\/\/studyinthestates.dhs.gov\/2017\/01\/f-1-student-athletes-learn-about-ncaa\">NCAA has designed a set of rules so college athletes maintain their amateur status<\/a> while competing in student-athlete games. When you first register with the NCAA eligibility center, you will undergo an amateurism certification process.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to compete as a student-athlete, you cannot sign a contract or compete with a professional sports team, nor can you receive any prize money that exceeds the actual expenses associated with the event you\u2019re competing in.<\/p>\n<h2>Capitalizing on NIL: Name, image, and likeness<\/h2>\n<p>There are many benefits of sports in college. One of the new developments is that college sports has introduced something called name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities. Now, student-athletes are allowed to earn money by capitalizing on their personal brand and identity. Which means you can maintain your amateur status and still make a profit with social media posts, hosting youth sports camps, signing autographs, or even endorsing a local business.<\/p>\n<p>Participating in NIL activities will allow you to keep your amateur status, but you must follow their rules closely. You cannot receive any \u201cpay-for-play\u201d deals, meaning you cannot get paid for scoring points or winning a game.<\/p>\n<p>NIL profits cannot be used as an illegal recruiting incentive to get a student athlete to attend a certain university.
